Altar Servers

We are pleased that you wish to become an Altar Server for St. Martha Catholic Church.  This is an important ministry which enhances the celebration of Mass.  Altar Serving is one of the ways our young people can begin to live out their Baptism promises by serving others and witnessing to their faith in Jesus Christ. By serving at the Altar and assisting the priest, Altar Servers have the opportunity to celebrate the Mass with more active participation. In our parish, any boy or girl between grades 5-8 can become an Altar Server.  Each server is provided with a schedule and proper training.

If you are an Children’s Religious Education (CRE) student who would like to serve please contact Ken Cummins, 502-491-8535
If you are a SMS student and wish to serve please talk to Karen Woo, 502-491-3171 or kwoo@stmarthaschool.org

Children’s Liturgy Program

What is it?
Liturgy of the Word for Children is a program in which the Sunday scripture readings are proclaimed and explained on a level appropriate to children in grades K-3 at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass.  Any child in this age group may participate – no registration is necessary.

What exactly do they do?
The children gather with their leaders in the front of the altar after the Opening Prayer and are sent forth by the presider. They process to the Library.  After a brief Welcome and Opening Prayer, they listen to the First Reading proclaimed from the Children’s Lectionary. They are then led in reading a Psalm and Gospel Acclamation. Next, the Gospel is proclaimed by one of the adult leaders.  An age-appropriate reflection on the Word is shared by the leader through stories, discussions, or pictures – whatever the leader finds most appropriate to conveying the meaning of the scriptures. The children are then invited to share their own thoughts and ideas. Following this, the children profess a simple Act of Faith, pray their Prayers of Intercession, and finally return to their families at the time of the Presentation of the Gifts.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Ministers)
These ministers distribute the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass and also take the Eucharist to the ill and homebound in the parish. The Archdiocese has mandatory formation classes that each minister must attend to receive their mandate from the Archbishop, with additional training provided by the parish. Please see the archlou.org website for dates and times of sessions.
Additional training is also conducted on-site at St. Martha.
